Getting Behind in Your Publishing Goals? It's Okay!!Mar 10, 2021
Happy Wednesday and first of all let me apologize for not getting my blog posted last week.
Life happened and I got behind which has inspired me to write today about what that can do to your writing goals and how to reset and push past it!!
So, you have a plan and it goes something like this.
Write my novel. Write every day for two hours. Finish it by summer, revise in the fall, send queries, get an agent and become a huge success---like on TV haha, that's for another day--seriously though, they make it look so easy.
But you don't finish your novel by summer, in fact last week you didn't write at all!!
"BUT THEY, whoever they are, say that to be a writer you MUST WRITE EVERY SINGLE DAY! Stephanie, you have even said this!!! I might as well give up!"
Okay, okay, okay, I do say that but the reason is to get you into the habit.
Writing a novel is like working out or losing weight/getting into shape--insert fitness goal here. If you don't do it consistently it's nothing more than you just saying you are writing a novel.
You have to do it all the time. Creating a daily routine is what is important but if you miss it, that's okay.
START WHERE YOU ARE!!!! And by the way, YOU ARE EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE!!
What happens when we make unrealistic goals and plans is that when we can't achieve them shame comes to visit and that rat bastard never leaves, and thus, we give up.
MAKE YOUR GOALS REALISTIC!!
If you can't write for an hour a day, don't say that you will write an hour a day. Say that you will write every morning for 15 minutes before----however your day starts.
Or say that this week I will finish two chapters, or whatever.
Make it REALISTIC and then it's much easier to reach.
BUT let's say that you have already missed a bunch of days, you are behind, all your social media mates are signing deals left right and center and you aren't even finished, it can sting but you need to do a couple of things.
1. Give yourself a break, it's okay.
2. Stop comparing yourself to others.
3. Make a new plan. Start today.
4. Create habits that you can fit into your schedule.
I want you to take some time to write out some of your goals for the month of March--the rest of March. Make them realistic. TRUST ME this works.
Then get a writing buddy, or post in a FB group---I have a free one and you can post your goals and get accountability by doing so-you can join here! (don't forget to answer ALL of the questions so I know it's you and you are serious about your writing career)
You can do it!!! It's okay to fall behind, but don't stay there. Take action today towards making your writing and publishing goals happen!!!
